What Are the Duties of a Compliance Officer?

A person with the dual-title of Compliance/Privacy Officer has the duty to ensure that a business is following local, stated and federal laws and regulations with respect to customer privacy issues. A law degree is often a useful credential as attorneys know how to read and interpret statutes and regulations.

Master Applicable Laws and Regulations

There are hundreds of possibly applicable laws within a Compliance/Privacy officer's purview. The Officer must ensure that he or she is aware of all applicable laws and regulations, and must ensure that his employer is complying with each regulation. This is a crucial function because mishandling a client's healthcare information, for example, may subject the business to civil or criminal liability.

Develop Compliance Regulations

The Compliance/Privacy office is responsible for developing, in coordination with the business's General Counsel, an internal procedures manual for complying with applicable laws and regulations. This procedures manual will act as a reference resources for other employees. The manual will guide them in dealing with data related to the business function.

Train Employees

In order for employees to learn, understand and maintain compliance with applicable privacy laws and regulations, the Compliance/Privacy officer will likely be responsible for conducting training sessions with employees. The officer will also be responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance by all the company's employees, contractors, and anyone doing business on behalf of the organization.
